Development of new types of bolted joints for cold-formed steel moment frame buildings

چکیده
It has been a growing trend to use cold-formed steel (CFS) sections as primary structural members in low multi-story buildings due their high strength-to-weight ratios, ease of construction and flexibility manufacturing variety cross-sectional shapes. However, CFS frames are not widely used seismic regions; one important reason is that the less redundant joints generally have ductility energy dissipation capacity inherently thin-walled properties. To address this issue, paper presents an experimental programme corresponding results on two types beam-to-column joints, which assembled adjacent surfaces built-up column paper. Different from previous research, proposed potentially suitable connect T-, L- cruciform for framed-structure buildings. was observed tests beams buckled before occurrence obvious damage tested joints. The satisfied design philosophy ‘strong connection-weak beam’. Joint Type 2 (JT2) exhibits overall higher performance terms strength, ductility, than 1 (JT1). JT1 satisfies rotational requirement Ordinary Moment Frames (OMFs) while JT2 Special (SMFs), defined AISC Seismic Provisions. connection zones within both can be classified semi-rigid according approach recommended by Eurocode 3: Part 1–8, with exhibiting stiffness JT2. Overall, connected very slender bolts, so far shown moderate provide resistance applied framed regions, improved further work.

Structural behavior of cold-formed stainless steel bolted connections
This paper presents a series of tests on cold-formed stainless steel bolted connections. The test specimens were fabricated from three different types of stainless steel, including austenitic stainless steel EN1.4301 (AISI 304) and EN1.4571 (AISI 316Ti having small amount of titanium) as well as lean duplex stainless steel EN1.4162 (AISI S32101). The material properties of the three types of st...
متن کاملA Retrofitting Framework for Pre-Northridge Steel Moment-Frame Buildings
A case study of retrofitting a 20-story pre-Northridge steel moment-frame building is presented. Twelve retrofit 4 schemes are developed with varying degrees of intervention. Three retrofitting techniques are considered: up5 grading the brittle beam-to-column moment resisting connections, and implementing either conventional or 6 buckling-restrained brace elements within the existing moment-fra...
متن کاملFinite Element Analysis on Tensile Stiffness of Cold-Formed Steel Bolted Connections
This paper presents a finite element analysis on the tensile stiffness of steel bolted connections, which are fabricated from thin-walled cold-formed steel strips and members. This type of bolted connection is usually used to assemble the diagonal bracing member in the light steel structure. Unlike the architectural steel structure, thin walled steel bolted connection cannot be simplified into ...
متن کاملOPTIMAL SENSOR PLACEMENT FOR MODAL IDENTIFICATION OF A STRAP-BRACED COLD FORMED STEEL FRAME BASED ON IMPROVED GENETIC ALGORITHM
This paper is concerned with the determination of optimal sensor locations for structural modal identification in a strap-braced cold formed steel frame based on an improved genetic algorithm (IGA). Six different optimal sensor placement performance indices have been taken as the fitness functions two based on modal assurance criterion (MAC), two based on maximization of the determinant of a Fi...
متن کاملPeriod Formulas for Moment-resisting Frame Buildings
Most seismic codes specify empirical formulas to estimate the fundamental vibration period of buildings. Evaluated first in this paper are the formulas specified in present US codes using the available data on the fundamental period of buildings “measured” from their motions recorded during eight California earthquakes, starting from the 1971 San Fernando earthquake and ending with the 1994 Nor...
